LMS 80’s Disco

3 min read

On 4th August Losing My Sight UK held an 80’s charity disco at Roko Leisure centre in Portsmouth.

The charity disco was a great fund raising event for the charity who are based in Portsmouth and are also like so many other charities struggling for funds for maintaining their services for the visually impaired and blind community in Portsmouth.

Losing My Sight UK started as a magazine for the first year and had a small reader base that reached out across the country and had a few reader in America, China, Canada and the UAE.

Despite the small success of the magazine Dave Taylor founder of then Losing My Sight Magazine felt that he had to concentrate on the visually impaired and blind community in Portsmouth before trying to expand nationwide or even globally.

The decision to remain grounded and locally based was probably the best thing Dave had decided to do, even though it was difficult at first, but with the help from Denis Brzozowski who has been with Dave from the start when he volunteered to help with building the magazine and website.

Once the decision was made to remain grounded Losing My Sight Magazine Charity was formed, to help encourage the visually impaired and blind community in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas to gain their confidence and enjoy a more independent life.

As the Charitable Incorporated Organisation was formed it was possible for them to approach The National Lottery Awards For All to raise £9,643.00 for activities in 2017, this was achieved and Losing My Sight Magazine was up and running.

2017 was a very busy year for the charity organising many activities such as setting up a weekly Fit Club as well as Sailing, Climbing, Archery and have set up a small photography club.

By the end of the lottery funding Losing My Sight Magazine found that it needed to be re branded because they felt that being known as a magazine could be hindering the possibility of raising funds.

In early 2018 Losing My Sight Charity was re branded and are now known as Losing My Sight UK, Dave said now we are Losing My Sight UK this has given us an opportunity for the future not just to reach out to the visually impaired community in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas, it gives us a chance to go wider a field like the magazine did 2 years ago, but not just with stories that will appear on their website but with activities too and maybe go global in years to come.

Losing My Sight raised £400.00 on the night of the 80’s disco and the total figure was £702.00 which will help towards funding activities in the future.

What does Losing My Sight UK have planned for the rest of this year, well despite a slow start in 2018 they were awarded £1,000 from Play Up Pompey and Pompey Supporters Trust this will be maintaining their weekly Fit Club.

Dave says that there are funding applications outstanding from three or four other organisations if they get granted then we can do some more sailing and varied activities.

Dave has also said that Losing My Sight UK are now in a much better position now then they have ever been with a more focused approached on their future and too progress the next step is to be registered as a charity rather than continuing as they are at the moment, by doing this will enhance the organisation to slowly expand and help more visually and blind communities across the country and even around the world.
