Losing run ends after last minute equaliser

Pompey arrived at Fratton Park to face Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday night after a tough period both on the field and off it. Without a win in 5, the on-field performances were being questioned, much like the off-field display by the Portsmouth FC team in regards to match-day logistics at Saturday’s loss to Cambridge United.

Lee Brown score-opening free-kick

The matchup itself started positively for the home side. Lee Brown put Danny Cowley’s men ahead in the 6th minute, after drilling a free-kick under the wall and past the visiting keeper.

Pompey’s intensity had died down at the start of the second half, which allowed the visitors to claw their way back into the game. Plymouth’s Ryan Hardie, who had been a nuisance to the Pompey back line the entire game, took advantage of Kieron Freeman’s mistake in the centre of the park, which allowed The Pilgrims to break clear. The Scottish forward beat Bazunu by slotting the ball away at the near post and levelling the scores 3 minutes into the second half.

The gift of poor defending had made its way into the path of Ryan Hardie once again in the 80th minute, when Shaun Williams was found short in the centre of the pitch and allowed the Scot a clear run on goal, this time sitting down the Manchester City loanee between the sticks and slotting the ball into the empty net.

Just as the 820 away fans were on their 3rd rendition of ‘We Are Top of The League’, Sean Raggett found himself in an unlikely position 3 yards away from the Plymouth goal, where a nod down from Harrison allowed him a smooth tap into the net to send Fratton Park wild.

Plymouth take the lead (2-1)

Ultimately, it was a game which Portsmouth could have kept dominating after their first goal, especially with the impressive implementation of the wing-back system by Lee Brown and Mahlon Romeo. Nevertheless, an improvement on the previous outing against Cambridge United, it must be said.
